When was the last time you gave yourself an hour to just relax and have fun? Many of us are chronically over-scheduled and we lack that feeling of enjoyment in our daily lives. With beautiful spring weather upon us, now’s the time to restart the fun habit!
Try these tips for creating some well-deserved relaxation and playtime and notice how it boosts your mood, energy and sense of well-being.
• Set aside one day a week, half a day, or an hour where you don’t schedule anything that’s not fun. I created my special day “Fun Time Friday” in my weekly schedule over a year ago. Since then I have tried lots of new fun activities and notice significantly lower stress at work.
• Keep the same day + time each week. This makes it easy to schedule around.
• Just Say NO! When people ask if you are available at that time, just say “Sorry, already have a commitment at that time.” That commitment is with yourself; break it at your own risk!
• Keep a running list of fun things you’d like to do. Are there places in your neighborhood you’ve always wanted to check out? Get on your bike or take a walk and start exploring. Ever wanted to learn how to make real Thai curry? Check out your local Asian grocery for a new experience and try some new ingredients you’ve never used before.
Health comes naturally when we balance all that work with an adequate and deeply satisfying amount of rest and fun. Give yourself permission to take time to just be and notice that nice feeling you have when you are enjoying life at your own pace.
No one else can do this for you, so get out your calendar and your red pen and mark the spot where your fun + relaxation happen. This will be one date you won’t want to miss!
Wishing you all a fun + happy spring,
